5th India-Sri Lanka ODI abandoned

The 5th and final one day international cricket match between India and Srilanka at Ferojshah Kotla ground in New Delhi has been abandoned due to problems in the pitch. Earlier, India won the toss and elected to field. Before the play stopped, Sri Lanka were at 83 for five in 23.3 overs. Zaheer Khan picked up two wickets. India lead the 5 match series 3-1. After a Sudeep Tyagi delivery kicked off the pitch and skipper wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni struggled to collect it, Sri Lankan batsman Thilan Kandamby had a word with Dhoni before he approached the umpires. Umpires soon conferred and Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara was seen gesturing to his teammates from the dressing room. Sangakkara came onto the field to have a chat with the umpires and his Indian counterpart MS Dhoni. AIR correspondent said spectators were surprised that it took 23 overs to call off play because of dangerous pitch conditions at Ferozshah Kotla. Since morning, when the ball hit the grassy areas it seamed and bounced. Nehra's one delivery struck Tilakrathe Dilshan over the elbow guard. He fell on the ground, throwing his bat away immediately. Sanath Jayasuriya who completed 20 years in oneday internationals struggled on the pitch. Debutant Sudeep Tyagi struck Jayasuriya twice. Sri Lanka were 83 for 5. Later, the match was abandoned officially leaving a huge crowd disappointed.The entire pitch and ground committee of DDCA has resigned owning moral responsibility for the pitch fiasco which led to the abandonment of the ODI in New Delhi. The Chairman of the committee Chetan Chouhan, Convenor Sunil Dev and curator Vijay Bahadur Mishra were among those who resigned. The BCCI has also disbanded its grounds and pitches committee.
