59th National Film Award announced; Vidya bags Best Actress for “Dirty Picture”

Bollywood Actress Vidya Balan won the Best Actress award for her performance in the film 'Dirty Picture' in the 59th National Film Awards 2011 announced in New Delhi today. Chairman of the Jury, Ms. Rohini Hathangady said, Vidya Balan has been honoured for her brave and effortless performance portraying the rise and fall of a B grade actress in the film, Dirty picture.

Girish Kulkarni won the Best actor Award for his act in the Marathi Film Deool. The films Deool in Marathi and Byari in Byari language jointly won the Best Feature Films Award. The Award for Best Direction was bagged by the film “Anhe Gohrey Da Daan” ( Punjabi film) directed by Gurvider Singh. The Awards for the Best Special Effects was won by the hindi film Ra One while the Best Choreography Award was bagged by Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara for the song Senorita.

The film 'Chillar Party' bagged the Best children's film award. The best Child Artist award was jointly won by child artists in the Hindi films Stanley ka Dabba and Chillar Party. Anand Bhate won the Best male playback singer Award in the Marathi film Balagandharva, while the best female Playback singer award was bagged by Roopa Ganguly in Bengali film Abosheyshey. The Award for Best Cinematography was won by Cameraman Satya Rai Nagpaul for the Punjabi film Anhe Ghorey Da Daan. The Best Music Direction Award was won by Neel Daat for the Songs in the Bengali film Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbo Na, the same film also won the Special jury award. The Indira Gandhi Award for the Best Debut film of a Director was won by the Tamil film Aaranya Kandam Directed by Kamararaja Thiagarajan.

In the Non-Feature film category, the top honour of best film went to bilingual Hindi and English film “And We Play on” directed by Pramod Purswane. In this category three films have won two awards each. The Film Tiger Dynasty has won the Best Environmental Film and Best Cinematography awards. In this category, Awards for Best Direction and Best Editing have been taken away by the film There is Something in the Air. Film Panchakki has been awarded Best Short Fiction and Best Music Direction.

In the Best feature films in languages, “I Am” won the National award for the best Hindi film. Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbo Na was judged the best Begali Film, while Indian Rupee won the Best Malayalam film Award. The “Vaagai Sooda Va” won the best Tamil film award. Other best films honoured in the language category include, Anhe Ghorey Da Daan in Punjabi, Shala in Marathi, Kurmavatara in Kannada, Philjigee Mani in Manipuri Dille Ch Vasya Koi (in Dogri).

In Feature Film category, five films have won three awards each. These films are The Dirty Picture (Hindi), Balgandharva (Marathi), Anhe Ghorey Da Daan (Punjabi), Deool (Marathi) and Ranjana Ami Ar Ashbo Na (Bengali). Six films that won two awards each include Chillar Party (Hindi), Azhagarsamiyin Kuthirai (Tamil), Aaranyakandam (Tamil), Phijigee Mani (Manipuri), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (Hindi) and Game (Hindi).
