In Assam, filing of nomination papers for the first phase of polling ended today. Sources in the state Election Department told AIR correspondent that a total of 56 candidates have filed their nomination papers. Scrutiny of nominations will be done tomorrow. The last date of withdrawal of nomination papers is 24th of this month. Polling will be held on 7th of April in five seats.

64 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in the first phase. Meanwhile, campaigning has intensified in the state. Additional security personnel have started to arrive for election duty. The centre has deployed 58 additional companies in the state.
