55% polling recorded in Jharkhand’s 4th phase

The 4th phase of Assembly polls in Jharkhand is over and over 55 per cent voting was recorded in the 14 Assembly segments that went to the polls today. The polling has been peaceful. Our correspondent Shambunath Choudhry reports from Ranchi that naxalites fired in the air at 2 places – Gumla and Ghartsila – to scare the voters but it did not deter the people from casting their votes.<br/><br/>Briefing the media in Ranchi, Joint Chief Electoral Officer A.K. Sinha said that four persons were taken into custody as a precautionary measure. He said in Potka seat, web camera was used for the first time on an experimental basis to monitor the poll process by both the states headquarters and Election Commission in Delhi. Mr. Sinha said till now 304 cases of violation of model code of conduct came into light out of which FIR has been registered in 298 cases. He said, depending on success, more such web camera will be installed in future to monitor the poll process. <br/><br/>As reported, voting began on a peaceful note in all the 14 constituencies at seven this morning and ended at 3.00 P.m. In this phase, Over 24 and a half lakh voters had exercised their franchise to decide the fate of 233 candidates in the fray for 14 seats. The Maoists, having a huge presence in all the constituencies, had given a call to boycott the polls. AIR reporter adds that about 40,000 jawans and officers were deployed to ensure free, fair and peaceful polling. Air surveillance in the poll-bound areas were taken up and adequate reserve strike force was in place to face any eventuality.
