A seven-member high level delegation from Nepal government had a meeting with chief commissioner of customs, Visakhapatnam and discussed the modalities of clearance of import and export of cargo meant for Nepal through the Port of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The team visited the port on Friday and interacted with port chairman M T Krishnababu and other officials.The delegation led by chief secretary of Nepal, Dr. Somal Subedi, met the chief commissioner of Customs, Central Excise and Service Tax Ms R. Shakuntala and discussed the modalities of clearance of import and export of cargo meant for Nepal through the Port of Visakhapatnam.Nepal team had expressed possibility to see that the cargo would be routed through Visakhapatnam port and requested CONCOR and shipping liners to examine the areas of constraints such as freight charges, deployment of rakes, intermediaries and the logistics and expressed their confidence that they would do better business in the days ahead if the constrains are removed.Somal Subedi expressed his happiness that facilitating transport of Exim cargo through Visakhapatnam port is a historic milestone and this would strengthen the trade relations between both the countries and appreciated port chairman for the efforts taken in identifying Visakhapatnam port to be the second gateway Port for Exim Cargo of Nepal.He also stated that a trade meet in Nepal would be considered for better understanding between exporters and importers of India and Nepal.Visakhapatnam port has been declared as 2nd gateway port of Nepal recently. Currently, the goods imported and exported by Nepal are cleared through Kolkata Port under Treaty of Transit between India and Nepal.Under the amended provisions of the Treaty, four new road routes connecting Visakhapatnam with Biratnagar, Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj have been approved. Besides, operation of Rail Services between Visakhapatnam – Jogbani and Visakhapatnam – Birgunj is also envisaged.
