Karnataka IT, BT, Science and Technology Minister S R Patil informed that biotech companies in Karnataka have contributed 26 percent of country's biotech products worth four billion US dollars.He was speaking during a press conference in Bangalore today to announce the next edition of Bangalore India Bio international event to be held next year. The minister said that more than half of country's biotech companies are in Bangalore, and it has the fourth largest biotech cluster on the planet.Saying that Bangalore is the Biotech capital of India, the minister informed that the city supports highest number of start-ups in the country. It is planned to establish Biotechnology incubation centre to nurture start- ups or new companies in the field of Biotechnology.The State already has nine incubation centres in different engineering colleges across the State to promote new IT companies.The State government has earmarked over eight crore rupees to Horticulture University in Bagalkot and over six crore rupees to University of Agriculture Sciences in Dharwad to encourage agriculture and horticulture related biotech research activities.The IT-BT minister further said that scholarship given to students undergoing training in Biotechnology Finishing Schools in Karnataka will be raised from Rs. 5000 to Rs. 10,000 per month.
