In Bangladesh under an ILO-brokered agreement with international garment retailers & manufacturers and labour groups, a 40 million US$ compensation fund has been created to aid victims of Rana Plaza garment factories building collapse which killed 1135 workers in April this year. The fund aims to aid families of dead victims who will receive around 25,000 US$ each, while hundreds of workers who were mained or injured will also receive compensation. The fund is considered a landmark in compensating families of garment industry victims in terms of both the amount to be paid, and the modalities of payment. The money is to be paid in installments, beginning February, 2014, to ensure that families have a steady income for years to come. The amount to be paid is based on the anticipated wage loss of each worker killed, tied to the number of children. Bangladesh Govt has already paid several months of short-term emergency aid to the victims' families. The readymade garment industry employs around 4.5 million workers,80% of whom are women, and earns around 22 billion dollars export earnings for the country.
