Bangladesh government and the International Labour Organisation are launching a 24-million dollar initiative today to improve building and fire safety standards in the country's clothing industry. The announcement follows a series of disasters, including the collapse of a textile factory complex near the capital Dhaka in April this year. More than 1100 people were killed in the tragedy. In response, Western retailers, who buy clothes from Bangladesh, several governments and local manufacturers had announced a number of measures aimed at improving working conditions. The International Labour Organisation has been tasked with bringing together several of these plans on the ground.
