India's National Thermal Power Corporation has signed an agreement with the Bangladesh Power Development board for setting up 1320 MW joint venture thermal power plant.Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC, Arup Roy Chowdhury and CMD of BPDB, A.S.M. Alamgir Kabir signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations in Dhaka on Sunday.The 1320 MW coal based joint venture power plant will comprise two units of 660 MW each and will be set up at Rampal in Khulna division of Bangladesh .Bangladesh Finance Minister A.M.A Muhith who was the Chief Guest at the signing ceremony, said that the first joint venture coal based power plant was one of the projects which are part of the country's efforts to diversify its sources of energy production.Union Power Secretary P Uma Shankar who is leading the NTPC delegation described the agreement singing as a historic moment as it was the first joint venture thermal power plant being set by Bangladesh with any country.He added that the project which will be the single largest power plant in Bangladesh is expected to be set up by 2016.
