The 12th Senior National Women Boxing Championships began at Tatya Tope Stadium in Bhopal this evening. A total of 27 preliminary bouts are being played today. Mamta of Haryan, Sarjubala Devi of Manipur, Sanasari Brahma of Assam, Rukhsar Bano of Uttar Pradesh, A Puniavathi of Andhra Pradesh and Monita Devi of Arunachal Pradesh won their bouts under light fly category today.The official inaugural function of the Championship was cancelled after a fire incident in a part of the stadium in which a person lost his life.The Championship is being organized by the Madhya Pradesh State Boxing Association under the aegis of Indian Boxing Federation.More than 150 women boxers from 25 states and sports boards are taking part in the six day Championships. In all 153 bouts will be played in the Championships and 40 medals would be at stake. The 52 kilogram category event of the Championship will be the centre of attraction in which five time world champion M C MaryKom and national champion L Sarita will compete. The Championships will serve as a selection ground to shortlist players for the World Championships and the London Olympics camp.
