Government says, the production of sugar may increase to 25 million tonnes during the 2011-12 marketing season in the country. Food Minister K V Thomas said this while talking to reporters in New Delhi today. He said that this will also give a push to sugar export. He said that the initial production estimate was 24.7 million tonnes but the output can go over 25 million tonnes . He said that on the basis of production, his Ministry will soon work out a scheme so that some quantity can be exported. Mr. Thomas said that Food Ministry will work out the modalities for exports in the current year and will take up the proposal in the next Empowered Group of Ministers meeting. Speaking about inflation issue, Mr. Thomas said that he is concerned about high inflation and his Ministry will hold consultations with Finance and Agriculture Ministries to find a solution to contain inflation.
