52% voter turnout in first phase of Jharkhand Assembly polls

In Jharkhand, fifty two percent polling has been reported in the first phase of assembly elections held The Deputy Election Commissioner Alok Shukla told reporters in New Delhi yesterday that elections were largely peaceful, except for one case where a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate's personal security officer (PSO) got involved in a scuffle but no one was injured. Polling was held in 26 out of 81 constituencies in this phase. 470 candidates including 212 independents and 34 women are in the fray. Our correspondent reports that about 40,000 security personnel were deployed and four helicopters were pressed into service to ensure peaceful polling. Strict vigil was maintained in Maoist infested areas. The second phase of polling will be held on the 2nd of next month. Counting for the five-phase polling will be held on the 23rd of next month.
