The 51st International Film Festival of India will pay rich tributes to the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. This was announced during the Golden Jubilee edition of IFFI in 2019, by Secretary of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Amit Khare, as part of the Centenary celebrations of Satyajit Ray.<br />”<br />”IFFI will showcase his selected films, Charulata, Ghare Baire, Pather Panchali, Shatranj Ke Khilari, and Sonar Kella as part of this tribute.<br />”<br />”Ray directed 36 films, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. He was also a fiction writer, publisher, illustrator, calligrapher, music composer, graphic designer and film critic. He authored several short stories and novels, primarily for young children and teenagers.<br />”<br />”Born in Calcutta into a Bengali family which was prominent in the field of arts and literature, Ray started his career as a commercial artist and was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves (1948) during a visit to London.<br />”&nbsp;<br />”Ray's first film, Pather Panchali (1955) won eleven international prizes, including the inaugural Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. This film, along with Aparajito and Apur Sansar (The World of Apu), formed The Apu Trilogy.<br />”&nbsp;<br />”<span style="color: #222222;">Twenty-four days before his death, Ray was presented with an Honorary Academy Award by Audrey Hepburn via video-link. In his acceptance speech, he called it the best achievement of his movie-making career. As of 2020, Ray is the first and the only Indian to have received the award. He died on 23rd April 1992, nine days before his 71st birthday.</span><br />
