The Planning Commission has estimated the country's coal demand to go up to 1,000 million tonnes by the end of the 12th Plan period. In an approach paper for the 12th plan period, the Commission has said the demand for coal rose by about 8 per cent a year during the 11th Plan and may rise by about the same magnitude during the next Plan. AIR correspondent reports, in 2010-11 the domestic coal output was originally targeted to reach 680 million tonnes Per Annum in the 11th Plan but was scaled down to 630 million tonnes in the Mid-Term Appraisal.
