The Environment Ministry today gave forest clearance to Steel Authority of India for mining iron ore from Chiria reserves at Saranda in Jharkhand. The approval has been granted with 13 specific conditions governing forest clearance As per the Conditions only mining and primary and secondary crushing will take place in the forest area and mining will be done in the diverted area in phases. The company will have to earmark at least two per cent of net profit for corporate social responsibility in Chiria region. Maharatna SAIL had sought permission for diversion of 595 hectares of land . The permission has been sought for a period of 20 years. In view of the ecological sensitivity of the forest area, the Environment Ministry will also set up a multi- disciplinary expert group to monitor the concerns relating to the impact of mining on elephants and migratory routes.
