M C Mary Kom remains firmly on course for a historic fifth successive gold in the Women's World Boxing Championship. In the quarter-final of the 48kg category at Bridgetown, Barbados, last night, Mary Kom advanced to the semifinals by beating Lynsey Holdaway from Wales 9-2. Among other Indians, Kavita also entered the semi-finals. In the plus 81kg division, she defeated Adriana Hosu of Romania 9-6. In the semi-finals, Mary Kom will clash with Alice Appari of the Philippines and Kavita will face Kateryna Kuzhel of the Ukraine.However, there was disappointment for India in the 81 kg , when Laxmi Padiya lost 4-18 to Kazakh Marina Volnova. The current edition of the World Championship features 72 countries. The increased competition has hit 2006 overall champions India rather hard with just two medals assured this time.
