The Proneb Sen Committee appointed by the government to look into various aspects of slum statistics has recommended adoption of appropriate indicators for identifying the slum areas across the country. The committee submitted its report on 30th of last month and it was released on Friday by the minister for housing and poverty alleviation Ms. Selja in New Delhi. Giving details of the recommendations of the committee, Ms Selja said that the committee has also recommended for formulation of a policy for counting the slum population even in cities having less than 20 thousand population .This she said is important to achieve the goal of slum free India under the Rajiv Awas Yojna. The committee has projected a slum population of over 93 million people by 2011. The minister said that the priority of the committee was to create a reliable model based data for 1743 cities and towns which had been enumerated in 2001.
