Serena Williams has started the defence of her Wimbledon title with a straight sets win. In London on Tuesday, the American world number one defeated Portuguese teenager Michelle Larcher de Brito 6-0, 6-4 inside an hour and three minutes with an impressive display of power hitting. Williams faces Russia's Anna Chakvetadze in the second round. However, Wimbledon proved to be an unhappy hunting ground yet again for French Open runner-up Samantha Stosur. The sixth seeded Australian slumped to a 6-4, 6-4 first round defeat by Estonia's Kaia Kanepi. Earlier, French Open champion Francesca Schiavone had also made an early exit. In the Men's section, Spanish eighth seed Fernando Verdasco became the highest men's seed to fall in the first round. He lost to Italian Fabio Fognini in four sets 7-6, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. However, twice French Open finalist, sixth seeded Robin Soderling of Sweden advanced to the second round by easily beating American Robby Ginepri in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.
