Kavitha Rout of Maharashtra today set a new meet record in the womens 10,000 meter race at the 50th National Open Athletics Championship being held at the Maharaja's College ground in Ernakulam. Kavitha clocked 32 minutes and 41(.)31 seconds obliterating the earlier meet record set by Preeja Sreedharan of Railways with 33 minutes and 25 seconds at Jamshedpur in 2007. Preeja Sreedharan bettered her own meet record today by clocking 32 minutes and 41(.)72 seconds to win the silver. Lalitha Babbar of the Railways bagged the bronze. In the mens 10,000 meter race, S Reghunath of the Police won gold. Ajaykumar Patel also of the Police won silver while bronze went to Ajay Vir Singh of the Railways. In the medal tally, Railways are way ahead of others with 15 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze medals. Tamil Nadu with 4 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze medals are second, followed by Services with 3 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze medals. The four day event draws to a close this evening.
