Steel minister Virbhadra Singh said, the government has raised about 9,925 crore rupees by selling its 8.38 per cent stake in the country's largest iron ore producer NMDC. The minister chaired a parliamentary committee meet in New Delhi yesterday. The government now holds 90 per cent stake in the navratna mining firm. An official statement quoting the minister said, the share sale in NMDC was part of the Centre's initiative to put the ownership of PSUs in public hands and to bring in improvement in the quality of corporate governance through public scrutiny. AIR correspondent reports mining giant NMDC plans to ramp up its annual production capacity to 50 million tonnes of iron ore by the year 2014-15 against about 28 million tonnes in 2008-09.
