BJP leader Narendra Modi came under twin attack today with Congress lodging a complaint with the Election Commission against him for not disclosing the name of his wife in his affidavits in past elections and the government saying that a judge for the snoopgate probe against Modi will be named soon. The snoopgate refers to the charges of spying on a young woman in 2009 allegedly at the behest of Gujarat Chief Minister Modi.
Soon after leading a Congress delegation to the Commission to demand filing of an FIR against Modi for his wrong affidavits, Congress leader and Law Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters that the government has not backed out and it will name a judge to probe the snoopgate soon. He said the government has already announced the setting up of the enquiry commission and therefore there is no violation of the model code of conduct by naming a judge now.
Sibal said by not mentioning wife's name in the affidavits filed before the Commission, Modi has violated the Representation of People Act and the poll body should initiate action against him. He also said it is not a personal issue but Modi is legally bound to make all information regarding his family members and assets public.
In his affidavit filed along with nomination paper before the Election Commission for Vadodara Lok Sabha seat , BJP leader has mentioned his wife's name. However, he used to leave the column vacant in pervious election affidavits.
