Government is in the process of preparing a concept paper to tackle the encroachment of government land in consultation with various ministries.

Giving this information during the question hour in the Rajya Sabha, the Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Kumari Selja said the government land belonging to 21 ministries has been encroached by slum dwellers.

This includes over 5 thousand acres of land belonging to 88 public sector undertakings across the country. The Minister said guidelines have also been issued for preparing innovative pilot projects including projects for slums on land belonging to central government and its agencies.

The Minister said the government has approved 15 lakh houses under various schemes including Rajiv Gandhi Awas Yojana, of which 5 lakh have been completed.
