Five MLAs of the ruling Congress-led Democratic Front were suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly for the day on Monday for creating a ruckus on the issue of allotting Indu Mill land for constructing a grand memorial of Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar in Mumbai.The suspended MLAs included Chandrakant Handore and Prashant Thakur from Congress and Nawab Malik, Jeetendra Awhad and Shashikant Shinde from the Nationalist Congress Party.In the unprecedented happening, which took place immediately after the Question Hour on the seventh day of the on-going Winter Session of the State Legislature today, six members of the ruling alliance started shouting slogans and waved banners, demanding that the Indu Mill land be handed over for erection of the memorial.Speaker Mr. Dilip Walse Patil directed them to take out the banners and maintain the decorum of the house but to no avail. The Opposition members also pitched in saying that action be initiated against the alliance members for their unruly behavior. The Speaker had to adjourn the proceedings amongst the uproarious scenes for half an hour.On resumption of the business, Legislative Affairs Minister Mr. Harshwardhan Patil moved the resolution saying that the membership of five MLAs be suspended for the day. The resolution was passed by voice vote amidst the din.
