Agriculture scientist Professor M S Swaminathan says, five percent growth in farm sector is possible. For this, he said that the production and productivity of major crops has to be enhanced substantially. Government expects a 4 percent growth in this vital sector this year. <br/><br/>In an exclusive interview to AIR News, Professor Swaminathan asserted that the 5.9 percent growth was achieved in farm sector from 1980-85 when the GDP was 5.3 percent.<br/> <br/>Elaborating his point he said that a robust growth of 8 percent in animal husbandry and horticulture sector will help in achieving this growth. Professor Swaminathan asserted that states have been asked to prepare a plan for every district under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana to enhance productivity. He made it clear that Elaborating bridging the gap between demand and supply is essential to address the issue of achieving food security and the proposed Bill should take care of this important issue.
