In Assam, altogether 482 candidates remained in the fray for the first phase of elections scheduled to be held in 62 Assembly segments in the State on 4th of the next month. The Chief Electoral Officer of the State Mr. Hemanta Narzary told AIR Guwahati Correspondent Ramani Kanta Sharma that 27 candidates withdrew their nominations on the last day of withdrawal of nominations on Tuesday. 13 districts spread over Upper Assam, Barak Valley and two hill districts of North Cachar and Karbi Anglong are to be covered in the first phase of polls. Meanwhile, seven candidates, including a woman contestant, filed their nominations for the second phase of polls slated to be held on 11th of the next month in Central and Lower Assam,and the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) districts. In all 64 constituencies spread over 14 districts are to be covered in this phase of polling. The Asom Gana Parishad and BJP have released their party manifestos. Former National President of BJP Rajnath Singh released the party’s Manifesto in Guwahati in presence of several senior leaders of state BJP. The party assured to provide corruption-free governance in the State. Releasing the manifesto, Mr. Singh also asked the Congress President Sonia Gandhi to make her stand clear on the black money issue. He also demanded a statement from Gandhi on the matter. The Asom Gana Parishad in its Manifesto assured to seal the Assam-Bangladesh border besides providing a clean administration in the State.
