44th edition of US Open begins

The 44th edition of the US Open Tennis Championship begins at the Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, New York today. This is the fourth and final Grand Slam of 2012. The Indian challenge will be seen in all the categories, with Somdev Devvarman taking on Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain in the Men's Singles opening round today. Leander Paes, Sania Mirza, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna will be seen in action in the Doubles categories later in the tournament. Meanwhile, World Number One Roger Federer of Switzerland will aim to cap his dramatic renaissance by becoming the first man in 87 years to win six US Open titles. Federer currently has five New York wins, a mark he shares with US legends Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors.Including Federer, top seeds like Briton Andy Murray, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Russia's Maria Sharapova are also scheduled to play their opening round matches today.
