The 44th edition of the US Open Tennis Championships begins in Queens, New York today. The Indian challenge will be seen in all the categories, with Somdev Devvarman taking on Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo of Spain in the Men's Singles opening round today. Leander Paes, Sania Mirza, Mahesh Bhupathi and Rohan Bopanna will be seen in action in the Doubles categories later in the tournament. Including World Number one Roger Federer of Switzerland, top seeds like Briton Andy Murray, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus and Russia's Maria Sharapova are also scheduled to play their opening round matches today.The Flushing Meadows Corona Park will exhibit the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of 2012, the US Open from today till the 9th of September. The tournament, which first took place in 1968, is the modern iteration of one of the oldest tennis championships in the world, the US National Championship, which for Men's Singles was first contested in 1881. This year, World Number One Roger Federer of Switzerland will aim to cap his dramatic renaissance by becoming the first man in 87 years to win six US Open titles. At present, Federer has five New York trophies, a mark he shares with US legends Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors. Last year, Serbia's Novak Djokovic bagged the Men's Singles title, while Aussie Samantha Stosur hogged the limelight as she stunned local favourite Serena Williams in the Women's Singles finals, becoming the first Australian woman to win the US Open title. The Austrian-German combination of Jurgen Melzer and Phillip Petzschner won the Men's Doubles trophy. The Americans claimed the Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles titles.The duo of Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond won the Women's Doubles and the pair of Melanie Oudin and Jack Sock clinched the Mixed Doubles title.
