In Assam, over 43 lakh domestic and foreign tourists visited the state last year in comparison to 40 lakh in 2010.AIR correspondent reports, the tourism industry has flourished in the last few years due to the improved infrastructure and law & order situation. Encouraged by the increasing number of tourists, the state tourism department has taken new initiatives to woo more tourists.Assam has been chosen as the Theme State for the Surajkund Mela that will commence from 1 February. The multi-ethnic heritage of Assam will certainly get a boost this year at the Surajkund Mela. Apart from tourism, handloom, handicrafts and sericulture, food and folk culture of the state will be exhibited at the fair.Official sources said that, the wild-life and Kamakhaya temple -are the most sought after tourist destinations of the region.Assam has five National parks and 18 wildlife sanctuaries. The state government has initiated various tour packages covering the wildlife parks. The number of health tourists has also increased from countries like Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Pakistan.Apart from wild life habitat, the state has Majuli the largest river island in the world, rain forests, lakes and rivers and lush tea gardens- which also attract the visitors.
