Today marks the 40th anniversary of the collapse of the Bretton Woods currency regulation system set up after the Second World War. The system fixed the value of the dollar against the value of gold. In 1971, the United States left the system due to domestic problems with high inflation. The moves sparked global economic uncertainty and to oil prices.
