Four hundred railway stations will be redeveloped across the country. The decision in this connection was taken by the Cabinet which met in New Delhi this morning. Briefing media after the meeting, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said, Swiss Challenge method will be adopted for redeveloping the stations. The Minister also said that an expert committee will be set up to examine the proposals received for redevelopment work. The Cabinet also gave its nod to extension of the scheme of recapitalisation of weak Regional Rural Banks for next three years to ensure their financial stability.<br/><br/>The Cabinet gave its nod for the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation Project (NCRMP) Phase-II. The second phase will be implemented in the States of Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and West Bengal with World Bank Assistance at a total cost 2,361 crore rupees to address the vulnerability of the coastal community to cyclone. <br/><br/>This section of the population is generally poor and from weaker sections of society. For the NCRMP Phase-II, the Central Government will provide financial assistance equivalent to 1881 crore rupees through a World Bank loan. The remaining amount of 480 crore rupees will be provided by the State Governments of Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and West Bengal. The broad objectives of the project are to provide cyclone forecasting, tracking and warning systems, cyclone risk mitigation and capacity building in multi-hazard risk management.<br/><br/><br/>Major infrastructure which will be constructed under the project includes multipurpose cyclone shelters, access roads, saline embankments and underground cabling. The primary focus of the project is disaster mitigation with an objective to minimize loss of lives and property in the vulnerable States. The investments proposed in the States would strengthen the coastal infrastructure for protection of the community and their evacuation, greater accessibility, improved warning dissemination and quicker response. <br/><br/>The government today said it will release the caste census data at an appropriate time. It has set up an expert group headed by NITI Ayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya to collate caste count to classify this caste data. The decision was announced by Finance Minster Arun Jaitley after a meeting of the Union Cabinet. <br/><br/>He said that the decision was in line with the one taken during the UPA government in May 2011. He blamed the states for not being able to complete the consolidation of different categories. The government has been criticised by parties, including Samajwadi Party, JD(U), RJD and DMK for refraining from releasing the caste-based data in its first Socio Economic and Caste Census (SECC). The SECC data released on July 3 is first in eight decades.
