400 foreign academicians visited India to give lecture in educational institutions: Irani

Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has said four hundred academicians from abroad visited India to lecture in various educational institutions in 2014 and 2015. <br/><br/>She was replying to a discussion on the working of her ministry in the Rajya Sabha today. She said the government is reviewing the progress of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan and Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan on half yearly basis instead of annual review. <br/><br/>Mrs Irani said from next year, Aadhaar Card based academic tracking mechanism will be introduced to assess the level of the students. <br/><br/>The HRD Minister said over one lakh vacancies of teachers were filled during 2013-14 and 2014-15. Mrs Irani said the government is not in favour of imposing Sanskrit in technical institutions, but it is suitable for computers and academicians should take a call. <br/><br/>SWAYAM, Study Webs of Active -Learning for Young Aspiring Minds, will be dedicated to students of 9 to 12 classes free of cost in Indian languages. <br/><br/>The SWAYAM programme aims at creating a comprehensive and integrated system for enhancing the efficiency and effective education at all levels and especially a transformational change in the mode, pedagogy and style of learning for students. <br/><br/>The Minister said it was conceptualized by the HRD Ministry in consultation with all stakeholders, including the professors from Central universities, the State universities, course takers, examination agencies Government of India.<br/><br/>The HRD Minister rejected opposition's demand that the Centre should interfere to resolve matter of disciplinary action taken by JNU and Hyderabad University against students. Mrs Irani said that she is bound by laws and also favours maintaining autonomy of universities. She said intervention could lead to opening of Pandora's box.
