40 killed in Kolkata hospital fire

In Kolkata, at least 40 people have been killed in a devastating fire which broke out in the basement of the AMRI hospital in Dhakuria in the southern part of the city. Confirming the toll the Member (health) Mayor- in- Council of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Atin Ghosh said that most of them died following suffocation. Chief Minister, Ms. Mamta Banerjee has reached the site to take stock of the situation. The fire broke out at around 4 in the Friday morning and the ICCU ward of the hospital was severely affected by it. Twenty five fire tenders had been pressed into service. AIR Correspondent reports that the fire has been dowsed and rescue operation is on. The Mayor of Kolkata Shoven Chatterjee and State Fire Brigade Minister, Mr. Javed Khan are supervising the rescue operation. Several patients have been rescued by the firemen in the two adjacent buildings where they are being treated for fire and smoke injuries.
