4 years on, UN ends peace mission in Nepal

The UN today ended its peace mission in Nepal after four years with the UN Security Council calling upon Nepal's wrangling political parties to “redouble” their efforts to work together in the spirit of consensus to complete the outstanding issues of the peace process. The UN's blue flag was lowered at the office of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) in Kathmandu late on Friday to mark the closure of the mission, which officially comes to an end at midnight tonight. In a statement, the UN Secretary General expressed regret over “insufficient” progress in taking the peace process to a logical end and urged the parties to make sincere efforts to build the confidence that can bring progress on all fronts of Nepal’s peace process. He encourages Nepal to complete its new constitution within the foreseen time frame to help it build a better, more equitable and democratic future for its people. In her farewell speech, the Chief of UN Mission in Nepal Karin Landgren said though the peace process has seen several stops and starts during the past few years, it has never been derailed. Stating that the future of arms and armies are most immediate outstanding issues, she said challenges lie ahead, adding that peace process itself is unfinished. UN Mission in Nepal, (UNMIN), which was established on January 23, 2007 initially for a period of one year, had its term extended seven times to assist the peace process in Nepal.AIR Kathmandu correspondent reports that the Government and Unified CPN (Maoist) inked a crucial eleventh-hour deal last evening to give the responsibilities of UNMIN on monitoring of arms and armies to the Special Committee for supervision, integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants.Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and Unified CPN (Maoist) Chairman Prachanda inked a three-point deal to form a six- member committee to monitor the arms and armies of both Maoist and the Nepal Army after the departure of UNMIN today.
