4 rhinos to be translocated in Assam

Under Indian Rhino Vision 2020 four Rhinos will be translocated from Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary to Manas National Park in Assam from January 16 to 18, says Sri D.M Singh , Chief Conservator of Forests today in Guwahati. Earlier, last year, on December 29, two rhinos were released in Manas from Pobitora .The Two rhinos are being monitored on a regular basis at Manas National Park with radio collared facilities and they are getting adapted to the new conditions.’,says Singh.Since 2008 four rhinos, two males and two females have been translocated to Manas from Pobitora.He also says that Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary will remain closed on 17 January for visitors for the smooth operation of Rhino translocation.It is to be noted that the aim of the Indian Rhino Vision 2020 is to attain a population of 3000 (three thousand) wild rhinos in Assam spread over seven of its Protected Area by 2020. It is a joint venture of the Assam Forst Department, WWF and International Rhino Foundation and supported by the Bodoland Territorial Council,US Fish and Wildlife Service and other organizations. To gain it,Manas National Park has been selected to be the first one.Rhino poaching in the state has been decreased to 7 in 2010 in comparison to 14 in 2009.
