4 killed, 23 missing in boat collision in Philippines

In the Philippines, four people were killed and 23 are missing after two boats collided in darkness near the capital Manila during the Christmas holiday rush. The body of a woman wearing a life jacket and two others were retrieved by rescuers on Thursday morning following the collision between a flimsy passenger boat and a deep-sea fishing vessel. Coastguard spokesman Commander Armando Balilo announced the recovery of a fourth body in the mid-afternoon but gave no other details. An emergency operation in the busy waterway quickly swung into action, saving 46 people. Commander Balilo said 23 others are still missing, but an air and naval search is continuing, with other private ships diverting from their course to join the rescue. Regional coastguard chief, Commodore Luis Tuazon, said Catalyn B smashed into the side of a deep-sea fishing vessel early in the morning. The other vessel, a 369 tonne fishing boat named Nathalia, was damaged but was afloat and later helped in the rescue.
