4 Indians short-listed for this year�s ICC Awards

Family of Arjuna Awardee Athlete and Asian Gold Medalist Makhan Singh has welcomed the Central Government's decision to formulate a comprehensive sports policy to facilitate sportsmen by providing pensions and employment opportunities to their family members. <br/><br/>The issue of Makhan Singh's family's pitiable condition was raised in the Lok Sabha by the Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj, today.<br/><br/>His widow Salinder Kaur who wanted to sell his awards including Arjuna Award has thanked the government for this decision which would benefit many sportsmen living in oblivion. <br/><br/>Speaking to AIR Correspondent she said that this would be a real tribute to her husband who won accolades for India in 1962 Asian Games at Jakarta. Salinder Kaur is living with her son and his family in village Bathulla in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab.<br/><br/>Makhan Singh, an ex-serviceman, got famous when he defeated Flying Sikh Milkha Singh in the 1962 National Games in Calcutta. He won four Golds during the games in different events. During his sports carrier, he won 12 gold, three silvers and one bronze at National Games. He won the Arjuna Award in 1964. However, he died in penury in 2002.
