39 people killed in Russian train crash

In Russia, at least 39 people were killed and 87 injured in a train accident. The Nevski Express, travelling between the Russian capital Moscow and Saint Petersburg was derailed at 9.34 pm local time yesterday. The state-run railway company said the derailment could have been the result of sabotage, fuelling fears of terrorism. An unnamed security official was quoted by the Interfax as saying that a one metre-diametre crater was found near the scene of the disaster. According to Russian Emergency Ministry, four wagons of the train were derailed and two wagons were completely overturned crushing several people completely under the metal. Emergency services rushed to the scene of the crash and all the injured have been evacuated to local hospitals. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has ordered an inquiry into the causes of the derailment.
