37 people die in Novgorod, Russia as fire engulfs hospital for mentally ill

In Russia, at least 37 people are believed to have died after a fire engulfed a psychiatric hospital in the Novgorod Region. The firemen have managed to localize the fire that spread to over 670 square meters of the building. Two dead bodies have so far been found. The bodies could not be identified as they were badly burnt.

According to officials, there were nearly 60 people inside the building when the blaze took place. More than 20 people have been evacuated. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

In April, a fire at a psychiatric hospital outside Moscow killed 38 people prompting criticism of the care of mentally ill patients in Russia.
