32nd anniversary of Bhopal gas tragedy observed

In Madhya Pradesh, several functions were organised in Bhopal today to mark the 32nd anniversary of gas leak tragedy and Survivors of the world's worst industrial disaster took out a rally from old Bhopal to the defunct Union Carbide factory. They displayed posters and chanting slogans demanding proper compensation for the victims and stern legal actions against the accused.

Protestors burnt logos of Union Carbide and its current owner Dow Chemical. Non Government Organizations working among gas victims alleged that the US government is sheltering Dow Chemical for the last two years by refusing to serve the notices of the Bhopal District court against the US Corporation in the ongoing criminal case on the disaster. They demanded that it must stop violating the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty it signed with India in 1991.

AIR correspondent reports that an all religion prayer meeting was held at Bhopal's Barkatullah Bhawan to pay homage to those who were died in tragedy. On the intervening night of 2nd and 3rd December in 1984, several hundred people were killed and scores maimed for life when poisonous gas leaked from the pesticide plant of Union Carbide.
