32 people arrested for obstructing POSCO work

In Odisha, around 32 people were arrested today in Jagatsingh puri district for allegedly trying to obstruct the process of land acquisition for the 52,000 crore rupee POSCO steel plant near Paradip. Police said, activists of the United Action Committee (UAC), who earlier backed the mega project, were taken into custody as they blocked the entry route to Gada Kujanga opposing land acquisition work that was resumed yesterday after a gap of nine months. Additional Superintendent of Police (Paradip), S K Das said, the UAC President Anadi Rout was among those held.He said, however, there has been no untoward incident in any part of the proposed Posco project site and land acquisition work is progressing in a peaceful manner. Over 700 police personnel were deployed in Balitutha, Gobindpur, Gada Kujanga, Nuagaon and other areas in order to ensure smooth land acquisition work.The additional district magistrate (Paradip) Saroj Choudhury said, that among the first to receive compensation for parting with land at Bayanala in Nuagaon panchayat area was Natabar Swain who was handed over a cheque for 3.74 lakh rupees.
