31 soldiers killed as teenage bomber hits Pak army centre

In Pakistan, a teenage suicide bomber has blown himself up at an army compound killing at least 31 people. Officials said, the teenager, dressed in school uniform, walked up to the parade inside a heavily guarded area in the town of Mardan and blew himself up killing the soldiers with shrapnel and explosives. In the aftermath of the bombing, police and soldiers are manning the entrance to the Mardan compound. There is a queue of ambulances outside the main entrance, and the security forces are checking everyone coming in and out. Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani condemned the attack. In a statement, he said, such cowardly attacks cannot affect the morale of the security agencies and the resolve of the nation to eradicate terrorism. The attack comes days after the authorities launched a major offensive against militants in the tribal region of Mohmand, near Mardan. It was the deadliest suicide bombing in Pakistan since a woman with a bomb strapped under her burqa killed 43 people at a UN food distribution point on Christmas Day last year in the tribal district of Bajaur. Taliban has claimed the responsibility for today's attack. Speaking to the AFP news agency from an undisclosed location, a Taliban militant said, he was proud to avenge people killed by US drone attacks and by military operations in the tribal areas, and added that attacks would continue on those who protect the Americans.
