3 detained for journalist J Dey’s murder

The Mumbai police yesterday detained three people in connection with senior journalist Jyotirmoy Dey's murder case. The three are suspected to be the members of Chotta Shakeel gang, the right hand man of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. After holding the state Cabinet meet yesterday, Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan told reporters that there were ‘some developments’ in the Dey murder case probe. Mr. Chavan said a Cabinet sub-committee of five to six senior ministers would be set up soon for preparing the draft bill for protection of journalists. He said that the government, hoped to table the bill in the Legislative Assembly during its Monsoon Session. Meanwhile, after a meeting with Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik, Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil also told reporters that investigation into Dey’s murder is on the right track and a breakthrough is expected soon. Earlier, journalists in Maharashtra took part in relay hunger strikes to denounce the government's refusal to hand over the probe into journalist Jyotirmoy Dey's murder to the CBI.
