In Maharashtra, the second phase polling for Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti passed off peacefully. Sunday's poll covered four talukas including Aheri, Etapalli, Bhamragad and Sironcha in the Naxal-affected Gadchiroli district in Vidarbha region. Around 55 to 58 per cent voting was registered during the day amidst the unprecedented security arrangements.AIR correspondent reports, around 55 to 58 per cent voters exercised their franchise braving the possible challenge during the second phase of polling. No untoward incident was reported as the police and other security agencies kept a strict vigil at and around the polling stations in the four talukas of Naxal-affected Gadchiroli district.There are 102 candidates in fray for 16 Zilla Parishad seats and 172 candidates vying for 32 Panchayat Samiti seats in the four talukas. In all, 315 polling centres were set up for this purpose including 99 sensitive and 135 highly sensitive centres for which the unprecedented security arrangements were put in place.With this, the fate of these candidates has been sealed in the electronic voting machines. The counting of votes of both Zilla Parishads and Panchayat Samitis would be taken up simultaneously at different taluka headquarters on February 17 along with that of Municipal Corporation elections slated to be held on February 16. They included Nagpur, Amravati, Buldhana, Yavatmal, Wardha, Chandrapur and parts of Gadchiroli Zilla Parishad along with eighty three Panchayat Samitis associated with them.
