29 Tamil fishermen arrested by Sri Lankan navy

Sri Lankan Navy arrested 29 Tamil fishermen from Nagapattinam when they were fishing near international maritime boundary line today morning. The Lankan Navy also detained three fishing boats of the fishermen. This has created tension in the fishermen hamlets of the state.<br/><br/>The Tamil fishermen from Nagapattinam Akkaraipettai went for fishing in more than 300 boats last Sunday after almost a month. Rough weather due to strong winds had kept the fishermen away from the sea. The Tamil fishermen were attacked by Sri Lankan Navy when they were fishing near Kodiakarai. Fishermen who returned after fishing claim that they were fishing near the international maritime boundary line. They urge the government to ensure fishing without hindrance in traditional areas. The arrest of Tamil fishermen on New year eve has brought a pall of gloom in fishermen hamlets of Nagai. <br/><br/>Tamil fishermen want the government to intervene and ensure the immediate release of more than 57 Tamil fishermen languishing in Lankan jail. Sri Lanka has detained more than 60 fishing boats of fishermen as a deterrent measure. The fishing boats may get damaged if it is kept idle and fishermen say that their livelihood is badly affected.
