27 militants killed in Afghanistan

In Afghanistan, security forces said they have killed 27 militants and arrested more during separate operations in southeastern and central Afghanistan. A senior officer of the border police in Khost province said the militants were killed in the fighting that lasted more than four hours last night in Tanai district. The police officer said one militant belonging to Chechnya was arrested in injured condition and he was wanted by the Afghan government for his involvement in several terrorist incidents. Separately, the Afghan and international troops arrested several suspected militants during raids in the central province of Wardak today. A statement from NATO headquarters in Kabul said the operation was conducted in Saidabad district of the province to arrest a militant wanted by the government and foreign troops on charges of several roadside bomb attacks. Taliban-led violence is on rise as US President Barack Obama is to announce thousands of extra troops to Afghanistan next week.
