26/11:Kasab again takes U-turn

The lone surviving terrorist in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks today denied having participated in the attacks and said that he was arrested on the night of November 25, a day before the terror strike.

Kasab's statement was being recorded by Judge M L Tahiliyani, presiding over the trial, in Mumbai's Special Court. Kasab told the court that he came to India via Samjauta Express and had valid visa documents.

He said he was in Mumbai on the night of November 25 and was roaming in the Juhu area along with some friends from where the local police arrested him and handed over to the crime branch. Kasab also claimed that while he was in the custody of the crime branch, five FBI officials, including David Headley, had also interrogated him.

Judge Tahilyani asked Kasab more than 50 questions on the basis of the evidences recorded during the trial and Kasab replied to all of them in the negative. He said he had not landed at Budhwar Park or visited Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus on the day of the attacks. When the judge asked him specifically about bomb explosions and firing at the the railway station, he said it might have happened, but he was not present there.

This is Kasab's second U-turn in the case. Earlier he had confessed his crime before the magistrate but during the course of the trial, he denied making any confessions. Later on, he accepted his guilt partially when he decided to confess before Judge Tahiliyani. Public Prosecutor, Ujjwal Nikam has said that Kasab's U- turn will not affect the case as the prosecution has already presented ample evidence in the form of photographs, CCTV footage and eye-witness accounts.
