26/11: Pak panel to record witness statements

The Pakistani judicial commission, which is in Mumbai, will be recording the statements of the four key witnesses in connection with the 26/11 terror attacks case from today.

Today the panel is expected to record the statements of two witnesses including chief metropolitan magistrate R V Sawant Waghule, who had recorded the confession of terrorist Ajmal Kasab, and Chief Investigating officer Ramesh Mahale.

The statements of the other two witnesses including Dr Shailesh Mohit of Nair hospital and Dr Ganesh Nitukar, medical officer of the forensic science department at JJ hospital, are likely to be recorded tomorrow. These two doctors carried out the autopsy of the nine killed terrorists in the 2008 attack.

The panel will record the statements at the Esplanade court in south Mumbai. In the wake of intelligence inputs, elaborate security arrangements have been made by the police outside the court and in and around the hotel, where the panel members are staying.

The eight-member judicial panel comprises defence lawyers Khwaja Haris, Riyaz Akram Chaudhari, Fakhar Hayat, Raja Ullah-Khan and Issam bin-Haris, special public prosecutors Chaudhari Mohammad Azhar and Chaudhary Zulfikar Ali and court official Azad Khan.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam, who represented Maharashtra government in the trial against Kasab, has been appointed to assist the Commission.

The statements of the witnesses will be used as evidence before an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan, which is conducting trial against Lashkar-e-Toiba's Commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi and six other suspects in the case.

The November 26, 2008 terror strike in Mumbai left over 160 people dead and several others injured.
