26/11 happened for lack of cohesion between maritime security stakeholders: Admiral Verma

The Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nirmal Verma has said that 26/11 happened due to lack of cohesion between maritime security stakeholders. He was talking to newsperons in New Delhi today. Admiral Verma, however, maintained that maritime security had come a very long way post 26/11. The Navy Chief said that 2011 will be a watershed year in terms of naval acqusitions to secure the sea lanes. Regretting the fact that there was no submarine acqusitions for the last 17 years, Admiral Verma said that the gap will be covered once Scoripion submarines start docking 2015 onwards. In reply to a question on China's increased presence in the Indian Ocean region, the Navy Chief said that India is working on a long term maritime perspective plan wherever its interest lies. Admiral Verma expressed that the refurbished aircraft carrier Vikramaditya will be aquired by 2012.
