In Bangladesh, at least 25 people were killed and over 70 injured, many critically, in a huge fire triggered by a boiler explosion at a packaging factory, yesterday. Gazipur Fire Service and Civil Defence Deputy Assistant Director Akhtaruzzaman said the fire broke out following a boiler explosion at the four-storey packaging factory in Tongi industrial area, north of Dhaka. The blast was so powerful that a part of the building collapsed as the blaze razed despite frantic efforts by firefighters to contain it.

About 100 people were inside the packaging unit when the explosion occurred and the fire spread quickly because of flammable chemicals stored in the building.

Most of the 25 victims died at the scene while others succumbed to their injuries at the state-run Dhaka Medical College Hospital and other healthcare facilities in the area.

A five-member probe body headed by Gazipur Executive Magistrate Rehanul Islam has been formed to look into the incident.
