24 Indian fishermen remanded to judicial custody till March 1 in Sri Lanka

A Jaffna court has remanded the additional 24 Indian fishermen to judicial custody till 1st of March . The Magistrate directed that due process of law is to be followed to secure their release. These fishermen along with seven trawlers had been apprehended on Wednesday evening allegedly fishing in Sri Lankan water and handed over to local police at Elavalai police station in the Jaffna district. These 24 Indian fishermen were produced before a magistrate in Jaffna in this afternoon, after the mandatory medical check up. The Consul General at Jaffna has been given access to them.On Tuesday, 112 Indian fishermen along with 18 trawlers had been apprehended by the fishermen of Jaffna, 15-20 kms off Point Pedro and then later handed over to the police there. They have also been remanded to judicial custody for two weeks by a Court in Jaffna.
